Check your boats- South & Wall

Sep 19, 2022

South basin and the wall.

This afternoon, after 5:15, two young men with backpacks were observed to scale the fence by south washroom then proceed around south basin area.

The police had arrived and approached them after they had exited the property. They have been identified and will be charged if found here in the future.

Checking your boats may be advisable.

Becky Middlebrook

Commodore

Otto Visser

We are saddened to report that Otto Visser has passed away.
Otto and Paulien Visser were longtime sailors and club members and had only recently released their membership when Otto‘s health began to fail.
Otto had faithfully served on the board of directors.

From a 1984 Cruising World article:

“Key of Sea, Otto and Pauline Visser’s Sirius 28, which was mentioned in the May, 1984, Passage Notes, was lost last December on the Moroccan coast on a passage from the Mediterranean to the Canary Islands. The couple, who got off the boat safely, were forced to abandon Key of Sea after heavy weather, steering failure and an inshore current drove the boat on to a rocky shore. ”It was unfortunate,” said Otto, “but it hasn’t turned us off sailing.” After the accident they returned to their home town of Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada.”

Fair winds to Otto and Paulien.

July 1 Weekend- Parking

June 28, 2022

IMPORTANT message for this JULY 1 WEEKEND.

 A machine will be trenching

THIS MONDAY JULY 4 and JULY 5 for the installation of the new washroom hookup. Trenching will be from the South Gate, around the west basin and up the hill behind the clubhouse, heading to the yellow slide on the playground.  (The orange paint on the ground, if it survives the rain,  is basically the path)

Cars MUST NOT be left parked around that path on those days.

Please also avoid parking immediately beside the lower NE corner of clubhouse. ( near kitchen door)

Thank-you you for your cooperation. Apologize for any inconvenience this will cause but the project must get finished.

4 volunteers are needed with their shovels to do some finer work to help to keep the costs down.

If you haven’t pitched in this spring on the Property committee, here is your opportunity to do so.  We all need to do our part to keep the costs down.  A number of members have already given of their free time, labour and expertise to the washroom project. Thank you to everyone of you for that commitment.  I know Travis has appreciated each of you.

Please step up to help Mon July 4 and Reach out to Travis at travis@vandolders.com

More news—-

Thank you to Gerald Overmars for  stepping up and repairing the lower clubhouse door which had been malfunctioning for many weeks. Closes like a dream now!

Kevin McDonald has been hand spraying weeds on the property with a safe solution and they can now be  pulled a little easier in front of all our docks. Thank-you for taking a few minutes to help out.

The fuel dock washroom has recently had a facelift, thanks to Johnny Sollazo.

Members have been pitching in and we notice. So Thank-you!

TNT Landscaping was down today for the first cut and it looks great.

The pedestrian-gate at the north entrance has not been working since the spring and the Property director is aware.

If you need to exit or enter on foot from the north end of property, then please use the upper level pedestrian-gate by the garage, until those 2 keypads at the north are replaced. If the electricity goes down, you can always exit out the upper gate and upper pedestrian gate by pushing them open.

A lift truck will be also near the north gate to adjust the yard light that has been reported to be shining at our neighbours in the condominium. The Utility Director had already turned off the winter lights used for security purposes this spring.

Safe summer,

Commodore Becky

On behalf of the Board of Directors.

Goodbye Glenn & Megan Boisvert

Sailing vessel Sleek left the opening of GYC for the final time this morning at 7:00am to head to her new home in Midland Bay Sailing Club. Glenn and Megan Boisvert, ( previously s/v Compromise) sailed out of GYC for Thirty Seven years.
They both considered it a privilege to be members and enjoyed the boating community by working, racing and socializing regularly.
Glenn was Commodore in the 1990s and has always displayed a keen sense of what was always in the clubs best interest.
We’ll see you up on the North Channel and east shore waters, Glenn and Megan.
Sail on!
