Obituary of Jocelyn Graham

Her laughing eyes would light up every room.  Her lovely smile and her laughter delighted everyone.   We all loved her.   Our light has been taken from us.  Jocelyn Irene Graham died in Owen Sound, Ontario, on Tuesday, February 19, 2019.   Jocelyn was the beloved wife of Cameron Graham, her partner in life for over 70 years, mother of Sandy (Wendy-Anne Jones), Deb (Charly Reithmeier) and James, and grandmother of Mackenzie (Samantha Bradley), William and Jaya, and Michael (Rebecca Morey), Laura (Peter Hrkal) and Kathryn.   She leaves her dear sister, Carol (Barrie Laughton), her nieces Jocelyn Mather and Janet Angus, her cousin Arlene Anderson and family, her long-time friends Alec and Jane-Anne Douglas and many other dear relatives and friends. Jocelyn Sanderson was born in Ottawa in 1931 and raised on Bower Street in Ottawa East, playing in the nearby fields and orchards and attending Hopewell Public School and Lisgar Collegiate.   She graduated from the Ottawa Civic Hospital School of Nursing in 1954 and worked as a registered nurse for 45 years.  Cam’s father, the Reverend Lorne Graham, the Minister of the former Dominion United Church on Queen Street in Ottawa, married Jocelyn and Cameron in 1955.  They raised their children in Halifax and Ottawa.  In 1966, the family bought an antique wooden boat, “L’Aventure” (later rechristened “Dragonfly”) which became their summer idyll for the next few decades.  Jocelyn loved the boat and became an athletic deckhand, a proficient hull painter and a dear friend to countless fellow sailors.  She and Cam were long-time, enthusiastic members of the Manotick Classic Boat Club, the Cow Island Yacht Club and the Georgian Yacht Club.  In 2000, Jocelyn and Cam moved to Leith, Ontario where they restored the ancestral log home, participated in a campaign to restore the Old Leith Church and helped to run the successful and much-loved summer concert series at the church.  Jocelyn hosted countless post-concert receptions at her home for the musicians and friends.  On one memorable occasion she graciously opened an ad hoc bed and breakfast when the winter winds off Georgian Bay stranded concertgoers in metres of snow.  Jocelyn loved her gardens in Manotick and Leith, the birds that would come to visit her and her winter vacations in Eleuthera.   We planted a new magnolia for her at the house in Leith last summer and she looked forward to seeing its yellow blossoms in spring.   She planned to attend the wedding of her granddaughter, Laura, in Caledon last weekend.   But a sudden illness took her from us.  She left this world bravely and quietly for that safe haven where we will see her again.   We are bereft.  A boating friend told us that Jocelyn was a wonderful, loving and compassionate lady.  In his apt words, her death has taken the wind from our sails. A Memorial Service will be held at the Historic Leith Church on June 1st, 2019.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Historic Leith Church Restoration Fund.  See leithchurch.ca for further information or contact BRIAN E. WOOD FUNERAL HOME, 250 – 14th Street West, Owen Sound, Ontario N4K 3X8 (519-376-7492). Messages of condolence may be sent to the family on-line at www.woodfuneralhome.ca
