Sailing from the Canaries

This is a note relayed from Jane at Lion’s Head about Ian Nicholls doing a sail from the Canaries into the Caribbean this winter, starting in a few days.  I asked Ian if I could post this to the GYC and he said fine.  It’s a good time of year to watch a sail unfold.  He’ll be blogging, he says.

Subject: Some actual sailing news!

Hi Jane,

We’ve had a busy December in terms of very sad news and important discussions within our sailing community.  I thought I’d add to the mix with some real sailing news about my upcoming adventure.  I’m leaving on Boxing Day to head to the Canary Islands where I’ll meet my friend Rick and his wife Lorraine aboard their new 45′ Lagoon catamaran s/v Airborne.   He’s spent the past few weeks moving from Malta, where he purchased the boat, to Las Palmas.  If you can share this note with the community, I know there are a few folks who would like to keep an eye on us as we track across the mid-Atlantic.

Follow our movement across the Atlantic here: https://forecast.predictwind.com/tracking/display/Airborne   – We’re leaving Las Palmas likely on Dec 29th!

This is the type of boat I’ll be on:  Lagoon catamarans : building, sale and chartering of luxury cruising catamaran

And here’s our approximate route:  http://tinyurl.com/zxjyw7q

I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and I look forward to sharing the experience with folks in the New Year!

How The Universe Changed In 2016

Owen Sound [GYC] – December 10, 2016:

As 2016 nears its end, it appears that the globe, the Solar System, the galaxy and the Universe hasn’t changed all that much. While we might notice some major events that occur out there in the Universe over the span of decades such as:

the arrival of a comet,
the brilliance of a meteor shower,
the flare-up of a nearby star,
those are only the obvious changes that occur.

And yet, there are some monumental changes that occur in our Solar System, our galaxy and the Universe that underlie the great, slow changes that take place on the grandest of timescales.
