Member Biographical Info

At the recent Meet & Greet a new member suggested displaying members’ bios.

Our web site has always had the capability of storing members’ biographical info. It is a standard part of your profile. A few of you have listed your boating experience and positions held in the Georgian Yacht Club.

Until now that information only appeared as a foot note to a member’s news post. Since few of you make posts, no one saw what you had written

Now I have added Biographical Info to the pop-up that appears when you click on a member’s name anywhere in the Directory.

You can add your own bio. by logging on and visiting Edit My Profile.

Rope “Trick”

Sorry if most of you already know this, but it was new to at least a few members.

If you have two mooring lines looped over one bollard or cleat and you lay the second on top of the first, they have to be removed in reverse order. You can’t take off the first one without removing the second.
But, if you feed the second one UNDER the first (see the picture) they can be taken off in any order. Try it! It’s magic.

Two mooring lines using the same bollard

It could be used when two boats  share a bollard. Regardless of the order in which they arrived, they can leave without removing the neighbouring boat’s line.

Extending Bow and Stern Lines

On launch day this spring an unfortunate bow line handler ended up in the cold water when a knot separated!

The best knot for tying two lines together, especially if they are of different thickness, is the sheet bend.

In the picture above the blue line is the thicker of the two.

If there is a big difference in thickness the double sheet bend should be used.

Racing Calendar Set up. Revised “A” and “B” Lists.

I have entered events on the Members’ calendar for all of this season’s races. The same events (but no meetings and social events) are also on the Public calendar. I understand that this is for security and privacy reasons.

I have also made changes (additions/deletions/corrections) to the “A” and “B” lists as requested by the membership director.

I ask that the responsible directors (and members) please check that everything is OK.

Directors: Please remember that the web site uses a “Content Management System.” The idea is for you to maintain your own content, without the need to involve a webmaster. This will avoid any errors that I might introduce and speed up the process. Of course, I can help out when ever needed.
